Rooms of our Own had Heads of Terms agreed with the Council, was awarded a £165,000 grant from the GLA for professional fees, had over 40 organisations signed up to take space in the building, had support from our MP, many councillors and hundreds of local women. With the GLA funding we engaged architects, created a feasibility study and business plan andfound a supportive female developer. We were invited to a preliminary discussion by Waltham Forest planners and they were broadly supportive of all our proposals. Issues to be negotiated include percentage of affordable housing, which may be offset by the benefits of the community centre provision, and the height of the building. A larger number of housing units would have benefited the Borough’s target for the number of new homes as well as creating ongoing financial viability for the ground floor.
Unfortunately a change in Cabinet meant that the Council reneged on the offer. Such a HUGE loss to the borough and all the women who live there.
