We’re recruiting new Board Members

Thank you very much for your interest in joining our Board of Directors.

We are experiencing a hiatus at present as the result we have been working towards for the past 3 years has unfortunately been obstructed by a change of commitment on the part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

Several of our Directors who have worked extremely hard to get us to this point  have now understandably withdrawn from the project.

The situation is that we had huge local support for the project that was due to be built at St James St E17 7PJ, excellent architects, an experienced developer partner and a grant from the Greater London Authority. Now we need to look for a different suitable site and to procure local support elsewhere. A lot of the work is transferrable to another site, but the GLA grant is only valid until end of March 2016.

We are already in discussions with several boroughs near to Waltham Forest. However it is unlikely that in the current climate of cuts that any public body will offer us a site under the terms of the Localism Act, which was the offer made to us for St James St. This means we need to look at raising our own finance. The proposal is to establish a BenCom which is a type of co-operative society that is permitted to issue community shares.

I am retired and have the time and expertise to carry out nearly all the actual work required to move the project forward. What is currently needed is women who have the commitment and imagination to help with the decision making that informs the activities. Women who have expertise in property, finance, fundraising would be especially welcome. Women who have great contacts and good real or social media networks would also be valuable. However at this present time, belief in the project is the number one criterion.

I would envisage the time commitment in the current situation to be attendance at a meeting every few weeks, and some emailing and telephoning in between times to offer opinions, advice and support. Once the situation is more stable, we can revert to a more normal and structured process. At the moment you would be helping to create a project rather than helping to run something that is already established.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in pursuing, please email roomso4own@gmail.com and we can set up a meeting.
