Feminism in London Conference 2014

This was such an amazing event. Lovely as it is to engage with other feminists on social media there is nothing like being in the same physical space with hundreds of other amazing women. The introductions, energy, synergy and friendships that ensue are truly incredible. This is why we still need Women’s Centres; to provide those possibilities all year round!

Here we are the night before packing the goodie bags. At all previous conference packings during my long and varied career the technique has been to go round and round a table picking up one of each leaflet. However Julian had great new system where the BAGS did the travelling and each of us only put one item in the bag and passed it on …. bit like pass the parcel!

Lisa-Marie is to be hugely congratulated for being the lead organiser, and many thanks to her for giving Rooms of our Own the time to launch our £1/4 million fundraising target from the stage. Not too sure about being introduced as “Feminism’s Bob Geldof” but still!

We had a lot of interest at our stall, signed up a lot of new women and received some eye-watering donations. One woman who had just sold her house said we might as well have some of it! However we still have a very long way to go, so please click on the Local Giving logo on our homepage; Local Giving are matching the first £10 of every donation for a few weeks so NOW is the time to give please! You can also donate by texting ROOO14 and the amount to 70070. THANK YOU!

Many thanks to sister Director, Nabila Pathan and to volunteer, Clare Sikorska, for coming along to help.

You will notice that 50:50 Parliament have taken rather more than 50% of the space allocation!! However it is all in a good cause …..

There were some great speakers as always, but need to particularly namecheck Gail Dines who took a passionate stand against “choice” feminism …. “we are a movement!” “something is not feminist just because a women does it / thinks it!” and of course the amazing Mistress of Ceremonies.

and of course the finale of Finn Mackay, sending us on our way with renewed energy
