Had an excellent meeting today with Sharon Matthew and Flori Libreros of Community Matters.
I have known Sharon for many years and have huge respect for her values, knowledge and competence. Rooms of our Own is therefore honoured and delighted that Sharon has accepted an invitation to become a member of our Advisory Board.
We discussed the current situation facing the voluntary and community sector and shared many thoughts and ideas.
We also discussed the idea of a premises database. Many years ago I set up an organisation, AVCO, (Accommodation for Voluntary and Community Organisations) in the borough I live in – Waltham Forest. We devised a premises database to allow voluntary groups to search for suitable venues. When AVCO sadly folded a few years ago, Community Matters asked if they could take over the idea – see their website http://www.mycommunityspace.org.uk and of course I agreed.
Now Rooms of our Own is seeking to create a premises database that will a) be London wide and b) be focused on women-friendly spaces. So I wanted to be sure that Community Matters was happy for us to go ahead. Being the kind of sharing organisation that they are, they said “yes”!. They have no plans at present to expand their current website – which in any case is nationwide whereas Rooms of our Own will focus on London….
So …. amongst our next steps is starting work on the premises database
